Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

We specialize in providing comprehensive care and treatment options for hernias, including laparoscopic hernia repair. Here is all you need to know about this procedure.

What is Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery or Repair?

Laparoscopic hernia surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to repair a hernia.

In this procedure, a surgeon makes 3 small incisions (less than ½ inch) in the abdomen and inserts 3 small tubes (trocars) through these openings. A laparoscope (a camera projecting light toward the tissue being viewed) and instruments are passed through these 3 trocars. The surgeon then exposes and repairs the hernia while viewing the hernia area on a video monitor. Laparoscopic hernia repair is relatively old technology and has evolved over the past 20 years. It requires years of experience to perfect and this steep “learning curve” has been well documented in the surgical literature.

Robotic hernia repair is the latest evolutionary step in “laparoscopic hernia surgery”. In robotic hernia repair the use of small incisions and trocars is still used. The difference is that the image projected from the camera is now higher resolution and 3 dimensional. Also the robotic instrumentation is much more versatile and precise. It is also accepted by experts that mastering robotic surgery requires years of experience.

Why Laparoscopic Hernia Repair?

With the availability of robotic technology, laparoscopic hernia surgery is becoming less common. Large ventral hernias are clearly better managed with robotic surgery than laparoscopic surgery.

For inguinal hernia repair laparoscopic technique remains an excellent option even when compared with robotic inguinal hernia repair. The laparoscopic extraperitoneal (surgery performed within a layer of the abdominal wall) inguinal hernia repair is often the best option for certain inguinal hernia repairs.

Laparoscopic hernia repair has several advantages over traditional open surgery, including:
  • Smaller incisions and less scarring
  • Reduced pain and discomfort
  • Quicker recovery time
  • Lower risk of complications
  • Higher success rate

Should I Do Laparoscopic or Robotic or Open Hernia Repair?

This choice depends on factors like:
  • Size and type of hernia
  • Patient’s overall health
  • Surgeon’s experience and preference
Dr. Yunis will evaluate your condition and recommend the best treatment option for you. It is important that your surgeon has experience with all options for repair.

How to Prepare for a Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

To prepare for a laparoscopic hernia repair, your surgeon will give you specific instructions. These may include:
  • Fasting for a certain amount of time before the surgery
  • Stopping certain medications that may interfere with the procedure
  • Arranging for someone to drive you home after the surgery
  • Bringing comfortable clothes to wear after the procedure
  • Following any other instructions provided by your surgeon
Most often, surgeons will want you to lose weight prior to surgery to improve the outcomes after surgery.

How Long is Recovery from Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery?

Recovery time after hernia surgery can vary depending on your overall health, age, and the size and location of the hernia. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and are able to return to work within 3 to 7 days post-surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

What is laparoscopic hernia surgery?

Laparoscopic hernia surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used to repair hernias through several small incisions instead of one larger incision. A surgeon uses a camera and specialized instruments to repair the hernia while viewing the area on a monitor. This approach is commonly used for inguinal hernias and certain abdominal wall hernias.

Is laparoscopic hernia repair better than open hernia surgery?

Laparoscopic hernia repair offers benefits such as smaller incisions, less postoperative discomfort, faster recovery, and reduced scarring. However, the best approach depends on the type and size of the hernia, previous surgeries, overall health, and the surgeon’s expertise. In some cases, open hernia repair may still be the preferred option.

What is the difference between laparoscopic and robotic hernia repair?

Both laparoscopic and robotic hernia repair use minimally invasive techniques and small incisions. Robotic hernia surgery provides the surgeon with enhanced 3D visualization and greater instrument precision. Laparoscopic repair remains an excellent option for many inguinal hernias, while robotic surgery is often preferred for larger or more complex ventral hernias.

How long does it take to recover from laparoscopic hernia surgery?

Most patients recover quickly after laparoscopic hernia repair and return to light activities within a few days. Many people are able to return to work within 3 to 7 days, depending on the physical demands of their job and the type of hernia repaired. Recovery timelines vary based on the patient and procedure.

Is laparoscopic hernia surgery painful?

Most patients experience less pain after laparoscopic hernia surgery compared to traditional open surgery because the incisions are much smaller. Mild soreness, bloating, or discomfort is common during the first few days of recovery, but symptoms usually improve quickly.

Who is a good candidate for laparoscopic hernia repair?

Good candidates for laparoscopic hernia repair often include patients with inguinal hernias, bilateral hernias, recurrent hernias, or those seeking a minimally invasive approach. A hernia specialist will evaluate factors such as your medical history, hernia size, previous abdominal surgeries, and overall health to determine the best treatment approach.
