What
to Expect (inguinal hernia patients):
- Outpatient
surgery regardless of the technique.
- Procedure
time 30 - 45 minutes.
- Total
time at the surgical facility less than 5 hours.
- After
the surgery when you arrive home, you will be
able to care for yourself and walk up and down
stairs.
- Some bruising in the groin region is expected and will resolve within 1 week.
- You should be able to return to office work in 2-3 days after surgery.
- You should be able to drive 3 or 4 days after surgery.
- You will be able to return to moderate manual labor in one week after surgery.
- You should be able resume heavy lifting and sports 1-4 weeks after surgery depending on the extent of the original hernia.

What to Expect (ventral hernia patients):
- Usually performed in a hospital with an overnight stay.
- Procedure time 1 - 2 hours.
- After the surgery when you arrive home, you will be able to care for yourself and walk up and down stairs.
- You should be able to drive after 4 days.
- You should be able to return to office work in 3-5 days after surgery.
- You will be able to return to moderate manual labor in 7-10 days after surgery.
- You should be able resume heavy lifting and sports 1-4 weeks after surgery depending on the extent of the original hernia.

General
Instructions Prior to Surgery:

Post-Operative Instructions:

Pain
medicine will be prescribed.
-
Moderate activity can be resumed immediately
such as walking up stairs and getting in and
out of a car.

Lift
only objects light enough that will not put
stress on your groin or abdomen.

Remove
band-aids 2 days after surgery and you may
bathe or shower at that time.

No
driving until you are comfortable enough and
are not taking prescription pain medicine (usually 2-4 days after surgery).

A
high fiber diet is recommended for the first
week of recovery and a stool softener can
be used if necessary.

A
follow-up visit should be arranged in 7-14 days after surgery.
