Methods of Repair

Options for repair are numerous. Several different hernia repair methods exist for any given hernia. All of these techniques may have excellent outcomes when performed by surgeons with extensive experience in that particular method.

At the Center for Hernia Repair, all possible approaches for repair are explored for each and every one of our hernia patients. This customized approach helps us to achieve a durable and comfortable outcome. Reduction of post-surgical pain, quick recovery and prevention of recurrence are the highest priorities for Dr. Yunis.

Ventral Hernia Repair

Ventral Hernia Repair

Open ventral hernia repair involves an incision over the hernia and the hernia is repaired usually with a prosthetic mesh. In recurrent or complicated ventral hernias many techniques have been described and many are useful for different types and sizes of ventral hernias. The recovery period after this procedure varies from same day discharge to a 5 night hospital stay.

Advantage of open ventral hernia repair

  • Improved abdominal wall contour
  • Proper management of infection problems of the abdominal Wall

Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair involves one 12mm and two 5mm incisions on one side of the abdominal wall. High definition video is used to expose the hernia and repair it with one of many different mesh prostheses.

Not everyone is a candidate for a laparoscopic repair. In fact in many patients an open repair is recommended for many reasons including those that have a significant problem with abdominal wall contour and those with infection.

The advantages of a laparoscopic ventral hernia repair:

  • Lower risk of infection
  • Lower risk of recurrence of the hernia
  • Lower risk of wound related complications
